Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of an alphabetic language. It is done by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language, and the letters or groups of letters or syllables of the written language. Phonics is used in English speaking countries throughout the world and has been proven to greatly increase lifelong literacy rates.

Here is an example to consider. If you teach the word "CUB," a traditional teaching method would be to pronounce the target word many times and then write the word in a notebook to memorize or “learn” it. However, when the word "CUBE" appears, it may confuse the reader. The word "CUB" can not be used to read the word “CUBE” correctly. This is where phonics comes into play.

Phonics teaches that when the word "CUB" is followed by an "e" - magic or silent “e” - in the word, “CUB" takes on the alphabetic long “u” sound - like “you". So, we learn that "CUBE" is read as "cube" and is different than “CUB”.

With phonics, young learners can read their first words aloud and even decipher words they have never seen before. Phonics is a reading tool that supports correct pronunciation and speaking. Around the world, various national English teaching curriculums have adopted phonics as a base for the first two to three years of English teaching, either in first- or second-language programs.
